Parliamentarians from 50 OSCE member states (over 200 parliamentarians) and representatives of associated countries and international organizations participated in the 11th fall session, which was traditionally held in the form of general plenary meetings.
The Ukrainian Delegation was represented by people’s deputies of Ukraine, members and a deputy member of the Permanent Delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine at the OSCE PA Lev Biriuk, Serhiy Shevchuk and Maryna Perestenko.
Discussion of such issues as efficient management and integration as a basis for stability and security, promotion and protection of multinational and multicultural communities in OSCE region, economic and financial crisis control, policy of austerity, and the role of mass media in efficient governance were planned for this session.
People’s deputy of Ukraine, the head of the II General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment Serhit Shevchuk delivered a speech at the parliamentary conference “The role of mass media in efficient governance.”
The people’s deputy of Ukraine drew attention of the conference participants to protection of rights and safe work of journalists, and noted that “journalists’ main enemies are censorship and self-censorship”. He emphasized also that a journalist’s work should be based on principles of consciousness and moral and gave the example of how negative the Ukrainian society reacted to adoption of the law to amend the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine regarding increase of responsibility for offense against honor, dignity and business reputation of a person (the so-call “law on libel”) adopted by the Verkhovna Rada in the first reading and pertaining to safety of journalists’ work.
The OSCE PA Fall Session adopted the respective recommendations.
